2020 Coral Eclipse Betting Preview

The Coral Eclipse takes place this Sunday at Sandown Park. This year’s race is a star-studded affair, featuring flat-racing giants such as Ghaiyyath, Japan and of course, last year’s winner, Enable.

As is the case with racing all over the world, there are some concessions made and changes from last year to accommodate cancellations earlier in the year.

A revised racing schedule has presented lucky racing fans with the Epsom Derby and Oaks on the same weekend, so the Coral Eclipse is now only open to four-year-olds and older, as opposed to three-year-olds and older, which has traditionally been the case. That means three-year-olds will be limited to the Derby and Oaks.

What has historically been an opportunity for racing fans to see Classic horses test themselves against an older bunch, will simply be a showcase of fierce competition between some of the World’s best four-year-olds.

Having said that, there was actually only one three-year-old runner last year; Telecaster, who also finished last in the Epsom Derby.

Sunday’s race is run over 1m 1f 209y with consistent rain forecast for Saturday. Depending on how that goes, you can expect the going to be, at the very dryest, good.

Enable

Last year’s winner Enable predictably heads up the betting as favourite, coming in at 6/5 (at the time of writing), which seems like good value, considering the starting price of 4/6 in 2019.

The only Group 1 blemish on the six-year-old’s record came last time out at Longchamp, when he failed to defend l’Arc in soft conditions.

• It would be absolutely no surprise if the Gosden-trained runner returned to form here and claimed another victory.
• And with Dettori riding, it looks an even better bet.
• He has two wins and two places in his last four Group 1 races and can surely add to those on Sunday.

Ghaiyyath

Charlie Appleby’s Ghaiyyath is 2nd-favourite, currently price at 5/2.

The Godolphin owned five-year-old won last month in the Group 1 Coronation Cup Stakes at Newmarket, proving he is fit and raring to go.

He is a newcomer to Sandown, but William Buick will be looking to make it four wins out of five.

Lord North

John Gosden’s other runner, Lord North (9/2), claimed a priceless victory in last month’s Prince of Wales Stakes at Royal Ascot, beating 6/4F Japan (9/2) along the way.

Japan

Japan was favourite partly due to his victory in the Juddmonte International Stakes at York last year and can be excused because of the eight-month gap between races.

A tighter contest will surely ensue on Sunday.

There are a number of runners that need to improve on current form-figures to stand a chance, but in a small, competitive field, none can be totally discounted.

Deirdre & Regal Reality

The Japanese Deirdre (25/1) will enjoy the fast pace set by the favourites, while Regal Reality (25/1) made a good impression in a strong return in the Listed Wolferton Stakes at Royal Ascot last month a recent Gelding by Sir Michael Stoute and the Cheveley Park Stud could be of note.
