- Boxing events are now taking place around the world.
- The middleweight division is better now than ever before.
- Is Billy Joe Saunders retiring this year actually possible?
Boxing events are slowly beginning to resume. Unsurprisingly, fans of the sport are now eagerly waiting to see some of the best fighters compete. According to new reports, Billy Joe Saunders retiring is now a real possibility this year.
Saunders is one of the more controversial boxers currently competing. He’s also one of the best middleweights on the planet. Today, we’re going to look at what could lead to Saunders’ retirement from the sport.
Let’s get into it!
Top Boxing Promoters Begin Preparing to Hold Major Events
Combat sports are now beginning to take place around the country. The UFC proved these events could take place under the current scenario, as long as health precautions are taken. It didn’t take long for boxing promoters to follow the MMA leader’s path.
Earlier this month, several of the biggest promoters in boxing started hosting events again. Top Rank put on a number of small shows in Las Vegas. According to several reports, these boxing events did not pull in many television viewers.
Eventually, Golden Boy Promotions announced it plans to hold events soon. Oscar De La Hoya told the media that Ryan Garcia was expected to headline the promotion’s first event back. Those plans were eventually scrapped and Garcia is now in a public feud with Golden Boy Promotions.
Soon, all promotions should be back up and running. We’re likely to see some big fights take place as the summer goes on. Many are hopeful that the bout between Anthony Joshua and Kubrat Pulev eventually takes place before the summer ends.
It’s a great time to be a fight fan. Many are now looking at the middleweight division and specifically, Canelo Alvarez. According to new reports, one of the top middleweights in the sport may soon decide to hang up the gloves.
Billy Joe Saunders Retiring in 2020 Seems Highly Unlikely
Some boxing analysts believe that we’ve entered into a new “Golden Age” of the sport. Every single division is filled with incredible fighters. Many claim that the middleweight division is now the best in the sport.
There are certainly some great boxers here. Saul “Canelo” Alvarez sits at the top of the weight class. He’s expected to take on Gennady Golovkin in a trilogy fight later this year.
A huge number of UK fans believe that Billy Joe Saunders poses the biggest threat to Canelo. He’s 29-0 in his career and currently holds the WBO super-middleweight title. Saunders has incredible boxing skills and is known for his ability to take big shots.
This week, Billy spoke with the media and claimed he’s considering retirement once again. Saunders was unhappy to see notable crime figure and personal friend Daniel Kinahan pushed out of the boxing game. He’s willing to step away from the sport unless something changes.
“This is part of the reason why nothing has moved forward with me at the minute,” Saunders said. “There’s only one man I can trust and go away and work and tell him this is what I want to happen, and sometimes he’ll make it even better. Without a man you can trust in this game 100 percent, it’s something I don’t want to be involved in any more. I took a lot of advice from a very personal friend of mine in Daniel. He’s walking away from boxing, which is a big, big loss in my eyes. I don’t know if I want to be a part of it at this level anymore moving forward.”
Kinahan is a very controversial man in his own right. Most agree he shouldn’t be directly involved with the sport of boxing. Unfortunately, this may lead to Billy Joe Saunders retiring.
Boxing’s Heavyweight Division Continues to Ramp Up
As we mentioned earlier, every division in boxing is fantastic right now. The heavyweight division, in particular, is better now than it’s been in decades. There are many top-level heavyweights capable of becoming the undisputed champion.
We may see a true champion emerge in this division sometime this year. Tyson Fury and Deontay Wilder are scheduled to compete for the third time soon. The previous two fights between these men were fantastic.
Anthony Joshua should take on Kubrat Pulev sometime soon, as well. It’s not much of a surprise to see Joshua listed as the massive favorite heading into this bout. A win might set him up with the winner of Fury and Wilder.
Don’t expect to see Jarrell “Big Baby” Miller competing anytime soon, though. The knockout puncher recently tested positive for banned substances for the second time in just a couple of years. He may end up facing a lifetime ban from the sport.
Billy Joe Saunders retiring doesn’t seem likely. The UK native has some huge fights on his horizon. We’ll make sure to report on this situation over the next few months.
