Cubs Roster Moves: Tyler Chatwood to the IL, Jason Adam Comes Up, Jharel Cotton DFA'd

When Tyler Chatwood was scratched from his start on Friday, there remained hope that he’d be able to start at least one of the Double-headers on Monday. Unfortunately, after some additional time to rest that sore back, a return this week is off the table.

Here’s the last series of roster moves from the Chicago Cubs:

Chatwood heads to the injured list, retroactive to August 13th, which sets back his earliest return date to Sunday August 23rd – a week from today – in the finale against the White Sox. That is, of course, the minimum and most optimistic stay. Either way, I’m not going to lie to you, this isn’t a great week to lose Chatwood, with Jose Quintana still out plus five games scheduled over three days from Monday to Wednesday – against the Cardinals, no less.

As for the procedural moves, with Chatwood to the IL, the Cubs have called up Jason Adam from their reserves in South Bend, whom they signed to a minor league contract back in January with an invite to spring training.

Here’s what Brett had to say about him at the time:

Adam, 28, is a pre-arb guy who was non-tended by the Blue Jays after the 2019 season, which means they deemed him not worth a 40-man spot. Against that backdrop, and with him signing in mid-January, it would be a fair assumption that Adam is not going to be the Cubs’ first fully-guaranteed big league signing of the offseason.

He’s an interesting guy, though, having put up tremendous numbers in the results column in 2019, splitting his season between AAA and MLB. The peripherals at AAA were juicy, but in MLB, however, they were weird: 19.8% K rate, 11.0% BB rate, 25.0% groundball rate(!), .237 BABIP, 3.2% HR/FB(!!!). Basically, he got everyone to go oppo on him, and they couldn’t quite hit the ball out.

Adam throws in the mid-90s (and touches a good bit higher than that with huge spin), with a changeup and a curve. I’ll have to dig in more on him soon, because he’s kind of an odd one to figure out on the fly, but it’s easy to see why the Cubs would take a chance on the stuff.

But while Chatwood made room for Adam on the daily roster, he was not on the Cubs 40-man roster before today. So to make room, the Cubs have designated Jharel Cotton for assignment, removing him from the 40-man roster. The Cubs will now have to trade, waive, or release Cotton. It’s also possible he’ll clear waivers and can stick around, but we’ll see.

Adam, you’ll note, is a reliever, who had some success with the Blue Jays last season, which is almost besides the point. Whether or not he can help out in the short term as a fresh arm, he’s not a starter or a guy you necessarily expect to cover multiple innings (hasn’t been a starter since Double-A in 2014). In *addition* to the extra roster spot, I wouldn’t be surprised to see several more roster moves tomorrow/this week.

NOTE: Kyle Hendricks will start game 1 of the double header, with the second starter TBD. Let’s hope Hendricks can go all seven innings.
