- Leroy Sane to join Bayern Munich for nearly £45 million
- Sane rejected contract offers from Manchester City, so City decided to sell the player with a year left on his contract
- City may look to replace Sane with Aston Villa captain Jack Grealish
Last week, Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola admitted that Leroy Sane had decided to leave the club in the upcoming transfer window. However, the German international won’t have to wait until later in the summer to find a new home.
That’s because Sane has officially come to terms on a five-year deal with Bayern Munich. The deal includes a 10 percent sell-on clause for City. The player is expected to arrive in Munich to take his physical later this week. While he is not eligible to suit up for Bayern until next season, Sane won’t play another match for City despite the Premier League season continuing for another month.
City had reportedly attempted to get Sane to agree to a contract extension, but those offers were rebuffed by the player. He had one year left on his deal with the club, but the side have decided to sell him now instead of losing him on a free transfer next summer.
Hefty Fee For Sane
The BBC reports that the German champions have agreed to pay £44.7 million for Sane, but the fee can rise up near £55 million if the player meets certain incentives based on his play.

City originally signed Sane away from FC Shalke back in 2016 for a price of £37 million. He has won a pair of Premier League titles during his time at the Etihad, though he has missed the vast majority of the current campaign after tearing his ACL last August. The injury came shortly after it was reported that Sane was close to a move to Bayern Munich. Of course, the injury put any deal on hold.
He has scored a total of 52 goals across 192 appearances for Manchester City after accruing 11 goals in 47 games for Schalke earlier in his career.
Bayern’s Rich Attack Gets Richer
Still only 24, Sane will likely play a key role in a Bayern attack that has been one of the most formidable in Europe for years. The German giants recently clinched their eighth consecutive Bundesliga title, and the side have aspirations of capturing another European title when Champions League play resumes this August.
Sane won the PFA Player of the Year award for his contributions during the 2018 season.
The player will reportedly earn around £20 million per season with Bayern, which is a salary City were reportedly not close to matching. City are already well-stocked on the wings with Riyad Mahrez, Raheem Sterling, Bernardo Silva, and Phil Foden all having the ability to play out wide.
Sane has appeared in all four matchday squads for City since Premier League play resumed earlier this month, but he has made just one appearance thus far. That was an 11-minute stint as a substitute in City’s 5-0 triumph over Burnley.
Grealish An Option For City?
While Guardiola has plenty of wing options at his disposal, that may not stop the club from looking for a potential replacement in the upcoming transfer window.
City are reportedly set to join the chase for Aston Villa standout Jack Grealish, who has already attracted interest from Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur. The Villains’ captain has been one of the few bright spots for the team this season. He has scored seven goals along with six assists across 30 appearances, though he will likely leave for greener pastures this summer if Villa are relegated to the Championship.
