Real Betis will be looking to get back into the win column when they host Villarreal on Wednesday, July 1st, kick-off at 4:00 pm EST. These two teams are at very different spots in the La Liga table, with Betis in 13th and Villarreal fighting for European football in sixth place currently.

The home side is coming off an underwhelming defeat to Levante, who are just four points above Betis in 12th place. Villarreal on the other hand put forward an impressive performance against a struggling Valencia squad. In the last meeting between these Matchday 33 counterparts back in September, Villarreal won in convincing fashion at home, burying Betis 5-1.

Can Betis Improve on Poor Run of Form?

It’s been a dismal return to action for Real Betis since Spain’s top-flight resumed. They’ve won just once in five matches, losing three times in the process. They’re well above the relegation zone, but it’s vital that they start to put together some positive results. Betis has also scored just five goals in their last five matches while conceding nine.

Alexis Trujillo took over the helm after the sacking of Rubi in late June, but the former Spanish midfielder has also struggled to string together victories as the new manager of Real Betis. At this point in the season, they don’t have much to play for as European qualification is well out of reach, meanwhile, it’s a foregone conclusion they’ll stay in La Liga. It’s only a matter of time until Trujillo’s side starts winning though. Given their four-game unbeaten record on home soil, Matchday 33 could be a turning point for them against a quality opponent in Villarreal.

Villarreal Eyeing Europe

It’s been a very solid year for Javier Calleja’s men, comfortably sitting in a Europa League spot for next season. However, their sights will be set on fourth-place Sevilla and the last Champions League spot. Villarreal is just three points behind the Seville-based side, so any slip-up on their end could put Calleja’s squad in a tie for the fourth spot if they can continue their fine form.

Gerard Moreno has been one of the sole reasons Villarreal have been clinical in the final third, bagging 13 goals and four assists this term. The break in action has clearly benefited this club, going unbeaten in their first five matches since football returned in Spain.

Prior to the hiatus, they lost three straight. Their backline has looked marvelous, keeping four clean sheets in their last five. The addition of Paco Alcacer from Dortmund has also paid off, giving Moreno a top-notch partner up top who’s already scored twice since the restart.

Best Bet

Villarreal is posing a serious threat to Sevilla for the last UCL spot and given their outstanding run of form, it’s a very real possibility they could be in Europe’s most prized competition next season. They realize just how important every single match is right now in terms of a top-four finish, so I’m giving them the benefit of the doubt here.

Although Betis has been good at home, they don’t really have much to play for compared to Villarreal. With this in mind, Javier Calleja’s side will march into Estadio Benito Villamarin on Wednesday and grab three points, while keeping a clean sheet and winning by one or two goals.
