The Manhattan Stakes from Belmont Park Betting Preview – Saturday, July 4, 2020

The Manhattan Stakes (G1) is set to be held on the July 4 card at Belmont Park, along with big races such as the Met Mile, Poker Stakes, and Suburban.

The 1 1/4-mile event on turf often has some of the best grass horses in training.

Some of the probable horses for this year’s small field include veterans like Sadler’s Joy, Desert Stone, and Cross Border.

Here is a look at some of the top probables for the Manhattan Stakes.

Sadler’s Joy, Desert Stone

Sadler’s Joy is trained by Thomas Albertrani and owned by Woodslane Farm.

The 7-year-old son of Kitten’s Joy has a career record of 7-4-9 from 29 starts and earnings of $2,525,160.

His last performance was a third-place finish in the June 4 Tiller Stakes (Black Type) at Belmont Park. Before that, he took third in the Feb. 29 Mac Diarmida Stakes (G2) at Gulfstream and first in the Nov. 23 Red Smith Stakes at Aqueduct.

Sadler’s Joy will be joined by another veteran in the form of Slam Dunk Racing, Michael Nentwig, and Joey Platts’ Desert Stone.

The 5-year-old son of Fastnet Rock is trained by Richard Baltas.

His career record is 3-2-2 from 18 starts with earnings of $345,162.

Last time out, Desert Stone received a 119 Speed Figure after finishing fourth in the May 23 Charles Whittingham Stakes (G2) at Santa Anita. He also finished fifth in the March 7 Frank E. Kilroe Mile Stakes (G1) and scored the Jan. 4 San Gabriel Stakes (G2), both at Santa Anita as well.

Cross Border, Instilled Regard, Rockemperor

Cross Border is a 6-year-old from English Channel trained by Michael Maker and owned by Three Diamond Farm.

His career record is 7-5-1 from 23 starts with earnings at $334,221.

His two starts this year were a second-place effort in a June 3 allowance optional claiming race at Belmont Park and second in the Jan. 25 W. L. McKnight Stakes (G3) at Gulfstream. He also took sixth in the Dec. 14 Ft. Lauderdale Stakes (G2) at Gulfstream.

Instilled Regard has a good shot at winning. The 5-year-old son of Arch is trained by Chad Brown and owned by OXO Equine.

With a record of 4-3-4 from 17 starts, he has total earnings of $763,240. Out of three starts this year, he finished third once and scored one victory.

The victory came in his last performance on June 6 in the Fort Marcy Stakes (G2) at Belmont. Before that, he finished back in sixth in the March 21 Muniz Memorial Classic Stakes (G2) at Fair Grounds.

Rounding out the field of probables is the Chad Brown-trained Rockemperor.

The 4-year-old from Holy Roman Emperor finished third last time out in the May 23 Charles Whittingham Stakes (G2) at Santa Anita, which followed a third place effort in the Muniz Memorial Classic Stakes (G2).
