The Mount Vernon Stakes from Belmont Park Betting Preview – Thursday, July 2, 2020

The $100,000 Mount Vernon Stakes for fillies and mares 4-years-old and upward is set to run one mile on turf at Belmont Park on July 2.

The field of seven will include names like Fifty Five and War Canoe.

Here is a look at the field for the Mount Vernon Stakes. 

Fifty Five, War Canoe

Fifty Five is a 6-year-old mare from Get Stormy owned by Peter Brant. Trained by Chad Brown, she has a record of 11-4-5 from 22 career starts and earnings of $1,033,288.

The mare’s last two performances have both come at Belmont Park, but they were back in 2019. She scored the Oct. 19 Ticonderoga Stakes (Black Type), registering a 109 Speed Figure, as well as the John Hettinger Stakes (Black Type) on Sept. 22.

Prior to that, she finished fourth in the Aug. 24 Woodford Reserve Ballston Spa Stakes (G2) at Saratoga and second in the July 2 Dr. James Penny Memorial Stakes (G3) at Parx Racing.

Fifty Five will break from post 1 under jockey Javier Castellano.

War Canoe is a 7-year-old mare from Lemon Drop Kid. She is owned by Michael Dubb and also trained by Chad Brown. 

The mare’s career record is 8-7-9 from 35 starts with earnings of $447,228.

Last time out, she scored a Nov. 15 allowance optional claiming race at Aqueduct. She also finished third in the Oct. 19 Ticonderoga takes (Black Type) and second in the Sept. 22 John Hettinger Stakes (Black Type), both at Belmont Park.

War Canoe will break from post 3 under Irad Ortiz, Jr. 

Niko’s Dream

Another contender to watch out for is Sackatoga Stable’s Niko’s Dream. 

Trained by Barclay Tagg, the 4-year-old filly from Central Banker has a record of 3-4-1 from 12 career starts and earnings of $196,050.

Her last performance was a victory in a May 17 allowance optional claiming race at Gulfstream Park. Prior to that, she finished fifth in a March 28 allowance race at Gulfstream and fifth in an Oct. 4 allowance optional claiming race at Belmont Park. 

Niko’s Dream will break from post 7 under Dylan Davis. 

The rest of the field for the Mount Vernon Stakes (post, jockey) at Belmont Park will include: Fetching (post 2, M. E. Casse); Munchkin Money (post 4, M. Franco); Classic Lady (post 5, J. Rosario); and Kressie (post 6, E. Cancel).
