The Poker Stakes from Belmont Park Betting Preview – Saturday, July 4, 2020

The Poker Stakes (G3) is set to run on the July 4 card at Belmont Park.

The 1-mile event’s list of probables is led by Got Stormy and includes other names like Social Paranoia and Sombeyay.

Here is a look at the top contenders for the Poker Stakes.

Got Stormy

After being scratched from the Just a Game Stakes (G1) on June 27, Got Stormy is back to headline the Poker Stakes, where she will face off against males. 

A grade 1 winner, she has one win going the Poker’s one mile on the Belmont turf. Trained by Mark Casse, she has a career record of 8-4-3 from 21 starts and earnings of $1,524,078.

The daughter of Get Stormy finished fourth in the June 3 Beaugay Stakes (G3) last time out. Prior to that performance, she put forth a second-place effort in the March 7 Frank E. Kilroe Mile Stakes (G1) at Santa Anita, where she registered a 115 Speed Figure.

Got Stormy also finished fourth in the Feb. 8 Lambholm South Endeavour Stakes (G3) at Tampa Bay Downs and first in the Dec. 1 Matriarch Stakes (G1) at Del Mar, refgistering a 117 Speed Figure.

Social Paranoia, Sombeyay

Got Stormy will face some challenges, especially coming from Todd Pletcher’s barn in the forms of Social Paranoia and Sombeyay.

Social Paranoia has a career record of 3-4-5 from 14 starts and earnings of $847,210. The 4-year-old colt from Street Boss finished on the board twice out of three starts this year.

Last time out, he finished sixth in the June 6 Fort Marcy Stakes (G2) at Belmont Park. Before that, he took third in the May 9 Sunshine Forever Stakes (Black Type) and first in the March 28 Appleton Stakes at Gulfstream, the latter of which resulted in a 118 Speed Figure.

Sombeyay is a 4-year-old son of Into Mischief with a record of 3-5-0 from 13 career starts. His earnings are at $361,890. 

Out of four starts this year, he has one victory and two second-place finishes. 

The win came back on Feb. 29 in the Canadian Turf Stakes (G3) at Gulfstream. He also finished second in the March 28 Appleton Stakes (G3) at Gulfstream and seventh in the June 7 First Defence Stakes (Black Type) at Belmont.

The rest of the probables (trainer) for the Poker Stakes includes: Hawkish (J. Toner); Hembree (M. Maker); Valid Point (C. Brown); Majestic Dunhill (G. Weaver); and Eons (A. Delacour).
