- Many US sports leagues are planning to resume their seasons this month.
- The UFC is scheduled to host four major events on “Fight Island.”
- New reports indicate the return of Bellator will take place on July 24th.
The sport of MMA is now back up and running. Major UFC events have been taking place since May and many other promotions have been looking at ways to return, as well. According to new reports, the return of Bellator is scheduled to take place on July 24th.
It’s exciting news for fight fans. Bellator has grown to become the second-largest mixed martial arts promotion on the planet. It’s likely that Scott Coker will stack the first event with highly-exciting bouts.
Let’s look at what’s being planned!
The US Sports Industry is Slowly Getting Back On Track
At the start of 2020, no one could have ever predicted that the world’s professional sports industry would be shut down. That’s exactly what happened in March and no one could say when things would resume. Eventually, the UFC took matters into its own hands and held its first major fight card on May 9th in Jacksonville, Florida.
This gave many other sports commissioners hope for the future. Prior to the UFC’s first event back, the promotion was facing heavy criticism from people around the country. After the event, many sports leagues began looking at their own ways to get back on track.
Eventually, these leagues started coming up with legitimate plans to resume their seasons. The MLS announced it would hold a unique tournament-style season beginning in July. The NBA announced its own plans to kick-start its season, as well.
Many people around the country are desperate to watch sporting events. As of now, the UFC is more popular than ever before. Ratings for the upcoming MLS and NBA seasons will likely be the highest ever.
Professional sports are slowly getting back on track. Unfortunately, the situation that forced these leagues to shut down seems to be getting worse. There are fears that these leagues will once again close down if things don’t improve.
This week, one of the top MMA promotions in the world announced that it plans to start hosting events again.
Scott Coker Announces Date For the Return Of Bellator
The UFC has proven that MMA events can be held right now. It’s no surprise that other major mixed martial arts promotions want to do the same. This week, Scott Coker revealed a date for the return of Bellator.
Back in January, Showtime announced it would be overseeing Bellator MMA as part of a corporate restructuring. Coker has now revealed that he’ll be working with Showtime executives to host this return bout.
“Whether it’s fighter vs. fighter, or an event where you do both styles in the same night, the door is open, and those conversations are happening,” he said. “It hasn’t been determined, but I do think it will happen at some point. There will be boxing guys going into MMA, and MMA guys going into boxing. That’s something Stephen [Espinoza] and I have talked about.”
This event will be a crossover show with both MMA and boxing events taking place. Bellator has done this type of event with Glory Kickboxing in the past. With Showtime on board, the MMA promotion will get an even larger promotional push.
It’s still not clear who will be competing on this card. Several of the top fighters in Bellator have recently told the media that they hope to compete soon. It’s likely that at least a few title fights will be taking place on this card.
It seems like July is going to be a truly special month for MMA fans.
List of Major MMA Events Scheduled For July
Just about everyone is excited to hear about the return of Bellator. This promotion has recently signed some of the best MMA fighters on the planet including Gegard Mousasi, Douglas Lima, and Ryan Bader. Expect at least one of these men competing on July 24th.
The UFC has stacked July with incredible fight cards. On Saturday, the MMA leader is set to hold its first “Fight Island” event headlined by Jorge Masvidal and Kamaru Usman. Three more of these island cards will take place throughout the month. You can check out the dates and main events of the UFC’s July cards below.
July 12th: Usman vs. Masvidal
July 16th: Kattar vs. Ige
July 19th: Figueiredo vs. Benavidez
July 25th: Whittaker vs. Till
Not long ago, officials within ONE Championship announced they were holding a major fight card on 31st. This card is taking place in Bangkok and will feature the return of Yodsanklai Fairtex. Many expect Demetrious Johnson to compete on this card, as well.
August should be a great month for MMA fans, as well. We already know that a heavyweight trilogy fight between Daniel Cormier and Stipe Miocic will take place, as well. More Bellator cards are likely to take place this month, too.
All three of the world’s biggest MMA promotions are set to return. Unfortunately, it may be some time before any crowds are allowing in attendance.
